Scarring: How does a wound heal?

When a wound occurs, the body forms a scar to protect the wound whilst it heals. Ideally, this scar would blend in and look just like normal skin, but this is not the case. Scar tissue differs from normal skin in many ways. Among other things, it is less elastic and lacks hair follicles and sweat glands. It is also more sensitive to the sun’s rays. Scar tissue usually looks different, which is why we tend to talk more about reducing scars rather than removing them completely.

How visible a scar will be depends on several factors. The skin is of varying thickness in different parts of the body, which affects the healing process and, consequently, the size of the scar. For example, you are likely to end up with a larger scar from a procedure on your back than from one on your face.

The products work on all types of scars, both new and old, but results may vary. The best results are achieved when the scar is active and in the process of healing. Active scars are red and raised, whilst fully healed scars are white or brownish-purple. Scars are often at their most active during the first few months, but can be reduced even after that. Treatment can begin as soon as the wound has healed and intact scar tissue has formed.

The best results are achieved with early treatment, but the scar does not need to be brand new for the silicone technology to be effective. The time it takes for a scar to heal varies from person to person and differs between individual scars. The healing process usually takes a few months to a year, but a deeper scar may remain active for several years. The Pro-Sil pen, for example, has produced positive clinical results on scars as old as 15 years.

Abnormal scar formation

Hypertrophic scars are raised, often red, thick and may be itchy. These scars result from an overproduction of tissue and usually form within a few weeks of the injury occurring. Hypertrophic scars are more likely to form in skin folds over joints and in areas subject to significant skin movement, such as the face, the armpits and between the fingers. Scar formation cannot be prevented, but with the right treatment, the scar can be reduced and become soft, pale and supple. Keloid scar tissue resembles hypertrophic scars; it is thick and irregular in shape but often extends beyond the wound site. Medical-grade silicone can be used preventatively and to soften and smooth out hypertrophic scars and keloids.
Keep scar tissue moisturised using Dermasof Silk Serum, which promotes skin elasticity and aids healing. Pro-sil sticks containing silicone gel are also effective against keloids and smaller treatment areas. For larger scars resulting from surgical procedures, Epi-derm silicone gel plasters are used to achieve the best results.
